Mobile Signals and Health Effects
Mobile Signals and Health Effects

The issue of possible health effects of mobile telephones and mobile telephone base stations is very much alive in the public’s mind. Motivated by health concerns, a new wave of research has been undertaken in the United States and elsewhere, searching for possible links between cell phone radiation and health problems, including cancer.
This talk will review recent scientific evidence related to possible links between brain cancer and use of mobile phones, and recent regulatory developments related to human exposure to radiofrequency (RF) energy. Both subjects of this talk – health effects of RF energy and regulation of RF exposure, are broad and contentious

In the public’s mind, the most distressing issue is the possible link between mobile telephones with brain cancer. This issue first came into light when lawsuit filed in a US court in mid-1992 by David Reynard, alleging that the use of a cell phone caused his wife s fatal brain cancer.

Are Mobile Phones Safe ?????
There are fears that the electromagnetic radiation emitted from mobile phone handsets may harm health. In particular, there have been claims that it could affect the body s cells, brain or immune system and increase the risk of developing a range of diseases from cancer to Alzheimer s.
A study by scientists in Finland, published in 2002, suggested that the electromagnetic radiation did affect human brain tissue. Another study by scientists in Sweden, also published in 2002, claimed to have found a link between mobile phones and brain tumours.
Research shows that after a seven-and-a-half hour exposure to a mobile phone on stand-by there was a serious degradation of the white blood cells (the cells that fight disease). A day after exposure there was a substantial fall in the viability of white blood cells, and after the second day only 13% of white blood cells were viable.
There have also been reports of people suffering from headaches, fatigue and loss of concentration after using their mobile phones.
According to a survey carried out shows   that 12% of users use their phones for more than 20 minutes a day, and that 1.8% use them for more than two hours a day. "It is that 1.8% that we are worried about - that is about 250,000 people who are being put at risk of serious ill health.
What is clear is that there is a syndrome associated with excessive mobile phone use. Around 40% of users complain that they suffer from headaches, and many people find that after a day s heavy use of the phone that they have a thumping headache. After a while users feel extremely tired, and their reaction times start to fall off. After 14 months to two years some users will start to develop leukaemia.

Are there any risks for children?
The Stewart report recommended that children should only use mobile phones in emergencies. Since children could be more at risk from the radiowaves emitted by mobile phones. This is because their brains are still developing and their skulls are thinner, making it easier for the radiowaves to penetrate them.

Why can the head get warm when using a mobile phone?
As a mobile phone transmits radiations , the handset and the battery warms up, when placed against your head they transfer some heat to it. A small amount of heating will result from energy absorbed by your head due to the radio waves being transmitted from the mobile phone.

What Can people do to reduce the riskLevel?

Almost all agree that the best step is to keep mobile phone conversations short and to a minimum. Many believe that so-called hands free kits reduce the risks by cutting the amount of electromagnetic radiation entering the brain. They also recommend that users buy phones with external aerials so that it is as far away from the head as possible when in use. Similarly, it is believed that phones with a long talk time are more efficient and produce less powerful emissions. Users are also advised against buying handsets with a high "SAR" value, which means it emits more radiation

What is SAR?
To communicate with the network, mobile phones emit low levels of radio waves (also known as radio frequency or RF energy) when being used. SAR stands for Specific Absorption Rate, which is the unit of measurement for the amount of RF energy absorbed by the body when using a mobile phone. SAR is determined, in laboratory conditions, at the highest certified power level. When in use, the actual SAR level of the phone can be well below this value.
