Patients get musical touch
|
Giving a musical touch to healing, the government medical college hospital here has started playing soft instrumental music in its wards, giving a "soothing touch" to its patients.
Beginning with violin a couple of months ago, "the music has now become a hit with inpatients, who become impatient if there is no music," said TP Kalanidhi, Dean, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
The music is aired through speakers attached to each ward, around 6 PM, through the control room at the telephone exchange at CMCH.
The patients in psychiatry and de-addiction wards were benefitted the most with these pleasant notes, he said, adding that apart from violin, the hospital was now playing Veena and Jalatharangam.
Moreover, the music loving patients with the knowledge of Carnatic music want specific ragas to be played, he said.
Kalanidhi said he has contacted one of his former students in Boston, US, who is studying music as therapy through piano, and requested him to send some cassettes or discs based on traditional ragas.
Shankara Eye Centre in Saravanampatti in the city, has started the concept of playing music to its patients some five years ago.
