There is good news for women who suffer from recurrent abortions or
miscarriages. The National Institute of Immunohaematology (NIIM) has
demonstrated that these women can have successful pregnancies.

NIIH has shown that 100 per cent
live birth rate can be achieved in women having recurrent foetal loss
(bad obstetric history) without any side effects using two types of
anti- coagulants during the pregnancy period.

A study by the institute has
recommended use of any one of the anti-coagulant depending on the
affordability, NIIH Director Kanjaksha Ghosh said.

The
institute, a unit of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) used two
anti-coagulants - unfractionated heparin (UFH) and low molecular weight
heparin (LMWH) - in women with recurrent fatal loss of pregnancy on 33
patients.

It was found that the efficacy of
UFH in women with and without foetal loss was approximately 70 per
cent, and it was affordable by many patients. There was no adverse
reaction observed on any of these patients, Ghosh said.

However, for a standard dose of
LMWH, once daily from the 16th week to 36th week, will cost about Rs
50,000 on injections, whereas with UFH, the cost will be less than Rs
5,000.

Ghosh said further studies are being
carried out to see whether calcium heparin will be more effective than
the currently used sodium heparin.

He
said during the treatment, none of the patients were on any other
medicine such as aspirin, corticosteroids or intravenous
immunoglobulins.
